the red gold
An imperial spice
A pinch of history
Saffron has been regarded as one of the most expensive species in the world since the dawn of time and as a miracle cure against many ailments. From Greek frescoes aged over 3,600 years old, we can deduce that the pestle of the Saffron plant, the Crocus sativus, was already used as medicine. Ancient books from the Mongolian dynasty mention that prolonged use of saffron 'makes the heart of man happy' and also the Persian emperor proved once an avid supporter of the red gold.
"Saffron hath power to quicken the spirits, and the virtue thereof pierceth by and by to the heart, provoking laughter and merriness."
Anonymous English herbalist (1862)

Power of the flower
A pinch of biology
Saffron is extracted from the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus L.), a tuber crop from the lissen family. Three red threads of mashers are hidden in the middle of the purple petals. During flowering, the flowers are harvested and dried. As many as 80,000 flowers are needed for 'only' 1/2 kg of saffron.
